The shallowing of the Caspian Sea has been called an unstoppable process.

Over the past five years, the Caspian Sea has lost about a meter of water, 1.5 meters over 10 years, and 2.5 meters over 30 years. This decline is already impacting ports, shipping, fisheries, coastal tourism, and oil and gas infrastructure.
