The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris is preparing for a large-scale reconstruction project, which is scheduled to take five years.

This decision has been made in the context of enhancing safety measures, which includes the removal of asbestos, a toxic material, from the structure. The process of closing the institution will be executed in stages; the permanent exhibition will be closed in March, with temporary exhibitions continuing until September. A portion of the institution’s collection is scheduled for transfer to various museum sites across France, including the Public Information Library, which is to be relocated to the 12th arrondissement. And works by Wassily Kandinsky, which are to be showcased by the Paris Philharmonic Museum. Additionally, select paintings are to be accepted by the Louvre. The Centre’s collection is also set to embark on a multi-year tour of international exhibitions, with stops planned in Spain, China, and the United States. Furthermore, a series of films and performances are scheduled to take place at various venues in Paris, including the Grand Palais. The Centre Georges Pompidou’s decision to close during the renovation has been met with criticism from public figures, and the reconstruction is estimated to cost €260 million.
