Flydubai will launch flights from Dubai to Benghazi, Libya, in June. Tickets start at $570 one way.
The route is operated in partnership with Emirates under a codeshare agreement. Prior to its opening, residents of eastern Libya would fly to Dubai with a connecting flight, most often through Cairo or Istanbul, doubling the travel time and increasing the ticket price. Flydubai sees the launch as part of its strategy to explore underserved markets. The arrival of an Emirati carrier in eastern Libya marks a recognition that the market has reached a level of commercial viability where scheduled flights are viable.
Benghazi Airport is located in the eastern part of the city and is the second-largest airport in Libya. After the reconstruction of the terminal and the modernization of the runway, its capacity increased to 2 million passengers per year. The airport has modern baggage handling systems and electronic information boards. For the convenience of passengers, there is a waiting room with free Wi-Fi, as well as duty-free shops and currency exchange offices. A taxi ride to the center of Benghazi will cost about $10-$15, and outside rush hour, it will take about 25 minutes. Unfortunately, public transport between the airport and the city does not operate, so a taxi or a transfer from the hotel would be the best option.
